Reading Jn in a Banakshol Teahouse

Left to right: Lungshar, Gedun Chophel, Rangdrol, JamNor, Shokdrung, Jamyang Kyi and Tibetan Youth. (Click on image to enlarge)

.

Its not every day that you can make both your enemies and your friends happy with the same blog post, but I have something special here that I think will do do the job. It was sent to me by a friend who discovered it on a website in Tibet: Sangdhor.com . My detractors will be pleased to see an image of me being stoned by a mob, and recall those heady days in the autumn of 1985 when I was subjected to a full dress thamzing or “struggle” (Ch: 批鬥 pi dou or 鬥爭 dou zheng) in Dharamshala by the religious-right.

My friends viewing this cartoon will be pleased and reassured to see that our compatriots inside Tibet have read (in Tibetan and Chinese translations) some of the postings on this blog-site, and that they, furthermore, appear to be perfectly aware of the stupidity, intolerance and fanaticism that permeates our society today.

The cartoon depicts Tibetans whom the artist regards as reformers and intellectuals persecuted for their views, namely:  Lungshar, Gedun Chophel, Rangdrol (aka Thondup Gyal), JamNor, Shokdrung, Jamyang Kyi, and on the extreme right the Tibetan Youth. In the foreground a violent mob is throwing rocks at JN and shouting “Traitor, Unbeliever, Red Guard, etc., etc. One member of the mob is burning Gedun Chophel’s Art of Love (འདོད་བསྟན།). Sangdor’s cartoon seems prophetic when you think of the present campaign of harassment and intimidation against the Tibetan Youth (Congress). The only criticism I have of this great political cartoon is that our premiere dissident and writer, Tsering Woser la, has, inexplicably, been left out of the thamzing line-up.

I first became known to readers inside Tibet when I won the 2000 Crossword Book Award in India for English fiction. Although most of them hadn’t read the book (It was translated in about a dozen languages but not Chinese) I received messages from writers and students in Tibet telling me how proud it made them that a Tibetan had won a major award for writing a novel in English. Things improved when my essays started to be translated into Tibetan and Chinese, and I was interviewed fairly often on Radio Free Asia.  But I really got through to readers in Tibet after 2008 when I published “Black Annals” my two-part review essay of Professor Melvin Goldstein’s Demise of the Lamaist State. China regards Goldstein as the premier Tibet scholar on their side, and, if one goes into Chinese government white papers on Tibet specifically modern history, the key reference cited is Goldstein’s work. So it should come as no surprise that Tibetans with any knowledge of their history should not be too happy with our professor. Many Tibetans in Tibet began to comment on and analyze my essay and I was told that  a website was created specifically to further this debate. That year in Tibet the best blog award was received by a post titled “Jamyang Norbu Has Slapped Mel Goldstein“.

A couple of years later the most popular Chinese-language Tibetan website TibetCul.com [zh] carried out a survey of 100 most well-known Tibetans. From exile they only had two names. Of course His Holiness was there in a  prominent way, but yours truly also just managed to make the cut.

Readers in Tibet seemed to like my essays on “Old Tibet” on ancient environmental laws, on Tsampa appreciation, Khapsay making, on Law and Punishment, on the grasslands of Kyigudo and my mother’s memories of Gedun Chophel.  One article in particular “Karmapa and the Cranes” was so popular that multiple translations of it popped up on the web. I owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to my Tibetan translators for providing me this incredible gateway to readers inside Tibet. These modern lotsawas will remain nameless for the present as I been unable to contact all of them, and I don’t want to get anyone in trouble. To my Chinese translators and friends, Weimin Rose and John Lee, many many thanks. Of course there were some in Tibet who read my posts in the original English, one being a Salar Turk from Sining who contributed welcome information and encouragement in his comments. The Chinese translations are also beginning to be read Chinese readers at Beyond High Wall and commented on in a straightforward, non-fenqing way.

More and more Tibetans inside Tibet are now taking an active interest in the politics of our exile administration, and also my critical writings on this issue. The Tibetan translation of my recent “Tibet’s Next Incarnation” received this personal feedback (via Skype text) from Amdo: ” His translation of “Tibet’s Next Incarnation” is really very good. Many people around are taking a great deal of interest in this translation, particularly the youth. These days many of the youth in Tibet are speaking highly of JamNor.

It is just one comment by one Amdowa but it encourages me to think that even so far away, perhaps herding sheep by the shore of Tso Ngonpo (or, less romantically and more likely, doing grad studies at Sining U) someone is reading my stuff and arguing about it with his mates. It gives me real hope for the future of Tibetan democracy, something that the the sycophants, cynics and conspirators in Dharamshala absolutely don’t.

It goes without saying, of course, that we owe this new and invaluable ability to communicate and interact with Tibet, largely to the internet. Earlier I wrote my essays for the Tibetan Review (on an old Remington portable) which were read by a few hundred people, mostly injis who responded with “letters to the editor” pooh-poohing my suspicions about Deng’s Brave New China — plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose. Communications in general between those of us in exile and those inside Tibet was a very hit and miss affair, filled with strange rumors and speculations often bordering on the fantastic.

In the late eighties, the secretary of the Information Office, and on a separate occasion the Minister of Security, told me about a curious belief among many inside Tibet. It went something like this: that the Dalai Lama in His exile capital was advised by three trusted and wise counselors known as the three “Norbus” or “jewels” (presumably jewels of wisdom): Namkhai Norbu, Dawa Norbu and Jamyang Norbu. In one telling there was a fourth Norbu, the Dalai Lama’s older brother, Thupten Jigme Norbu. The originator of this tale might have heard of some writers and intellectuals in exile, and was struck by the fact that most of them had the same last name, Norbu. One thing is clear, this guy may have been a good storyteller but he didn’t have a clue about the political realities of Dharamshala.

  1. Blowing your own trumpet, huh?? How far can it be verified?? I am sure it cannot be verified much further just like most of ur other rants.. When someone loses respect, morality and character, one will be compelled to tell tall tales of heroic feats like this. No one respects u anymore jamyang. You are a disgrace.. I know u r a cheeky, shameless liar who thrive on people’s emotions but u r supposed to be a writer, so have some conscience at least. A writer without a conscience is no writer, just an idiot who knows how to make a sentence. Grow up and be responsible, please. Don’t drag rangzen into ur dirty divisive politics.

  2. It’s great to know that Tibetans in Tibet are aware of what is going on with the Tibet question. Every aspect of it.

They are no starry eyed raised in exile who spew out verbatim what’s been feed to them.

  3. No matter if you put lord buddha or HH among them above there still no one will trust u and your gang members …. go ahead ….let’s see how far ur kudrak struggle can go on…… why r you crying, at least your aristocratic cousin got job At RFA. ? But make sure, tell your aristocratic cousin not corrupt anymore as he did while he was in dharamsala because liu doesn’t has Marcy to kick his ass as previous aristocratic director ngabe…… better to praying well before you go to see agu down there ……because your hatred, bias of chokhasim and your improper struggle for aristocratic cousin’s seat in the term of rangzen … rangzen

  4. @ Rangzen Tulku,

That cartoon wasn’t drawn by JN. But whats wrong with blowing your own trumpet, ifyou have one?

Flaunt it if you have it. JN is the only Tibetan writer who won international accolade.

You can imagine what LS and Zabdhong Rinpoche do if they have 1/2 of JN’s accomplishments?

JN is a Buddha of Intelligence, sent from the 34th realm of heaven to get Tibetans out of the darkness.

  8. Great read JN la !

Even if you just typed the alphabet into your blog I am sure you would be attacked on the suspicion that there was some hidden code or agenda !

    I love the cartoon !

And as any good great grandmother would tell her little grandchildren..

……..It´s better to blow your own trumpet than to suck someone else´s !

Looking foward to reading all the comments to come.

  9. Jamyang la, we are all very proud of you please keep up the good work. Onwards we go, Rangzen all the way!

  10. To ,
    Aku tonpa.
it is really funny while reading what u have written. it is a so disgusting if we have to show off what we have accomplished in our life. do you know there is one old saying ” though gold is beneath the soil, the light shines in the space.”
so, JN don’t have to boost if he have done something. i am ashamed of having a tibetan like you in our society since you are a very running dog of JN. be the master of your own thoughts and master the your thoughts into action which will give you a real happiness.
be like a man and don’t compare JN with gedun choephel , dhondup gyal, and others because JN is a chinese dog while others have done so much for the tibetan welfare.

  11. Please keep the flame of truth flickering against the wind of defeatism, superstition, ignorance, naivety….They not only hate your writings because they reveal a lot about the culture of sycophancy so rampant in our society and cta. Many in the cta know about what you are talking about and in fact vigorously nodding their heads, but do not want to endanger their livelihood. You might also realize that many of those asking for your scalps are former TCY members, who do it to prove their loyalty to the corrupt administration. They the cost of honesty. But there are those in the know, but don’t want to weigh in this issue because they may not be invited to share the state for photo opportunities. CTA is now acting like a goonda organization, fit for a hindi movie. Fear and propaganda are two tools of Totalitarian state. CTA uses them effectively. It invokes His Holiness Name to sell anything if it fears it does not have popular mandate. Whenever they say, this is Kundhu’s ka, I read ” we lack a popular mandate so this manipulation of public awareness.

  12. རང་གིས་རང་བཀྱག
    སྐྱག་པས་རྐུབ་བཀྱག

readers,do you want to know who Sangdhor is?
He is the tulku(and ex-monk)who said all Buddha’s teaching are lies.
    Who is the catoonist?
He is the one who said Khechen Tsultrim Lodoe(head of Serta monastery, chinese destroyed most of their Dashak or monks’rooms in 2005)is a lair and Jamyang Kyi is a goddess.

  13. Jamyang la wonderful piece! Keep up the great works on Tibet and Rangzen. People who bad mouth you as an aristocrat are shallow ignorant people, that are themselves corrupt of moral values. These people have nothing but hatred and jealousy bound in them, and are often disliked by their own friends and family. Hip hip hurray for Jamyangla!!

  14. Here’s a simple math equation
    JN hated by China
    JN hated by CTA
    Therefore
    China = CTA, no?

    CTA kowtows China
    China ignores CTA
    JN exposes both sides
    CTA and China both
    Hate JN, don’t you know?

    If JN went to Tibet
China will put him in prison and throw away the keys
JN will be stoned and mobbed by gullible mass in Dasa.
Ergo, since I hate China and I won’t kowtow to China,
    I support JN
    I support Tibet
    I support Rangzen

  18. Daveno aka Devil Nga,

About the self-promotion, there is no better than your great leader Kim Jong Sangay. The whole issue of JN’s next re-incarnation article came out because of your master’s self-promotion.

  20. there is no doubt that these are the kind of ignorant people commenter # 13 has cited. i do see these are the kind of people who attack you Jamyangla with such labels without intelligent discussion because they are weak and don’t have a brain. these are the very kind of people that create disharmony among our people, and are never above the line. keep up your spirits and never be discouraged or distracted by people who try to bring you down by calling you names. the worst kind of people will attack one by name calling, labeling and slurs that are no different than bigots and racist people we see around and experience as Tibetan refugees.

  21. I’m just wondering how many folks here who are passionate about the struggle actually can and have read the works of the authors depicted in the cartoon – apart from JN and Dawa Norbu whose writings are done in English. Nowadays we have many folks who use the popularity of Gendun Chophel, Namkhai Norbu and K Dhondup without ever having read about them. I am pretty sure about this, for had they read all of them, I don’t think I would see such hatred, non-sense and bad humor spewed by almost all the readers.

  22. The administration that does not oppose china but conspire with it does not deserve my ‘ rangzeen lakdep’ money.

  23. That’s true. Now I am beginning to smell out why they are changing the Green Book. I think the Rangzen labdep is going to be called ” Contributions to run the China’s Satellite in Dharamsala.”
The Tibet Mongolia Office in Taiwan has succeeded.

  24. Tenam@ Thanks, I knew I was right.

dhasa dralok-@19, my master needs not move…all taken care of by 3rd party–poor master of yours he has to all himself.

  25. @ young punk

I will give you another equation in retort to ur stupid math abilities:

    China Criticises HH
    JN Criticises HH

    Therefore, JN = China

China clicks pics with Shugden and applauds them,
JN Clicks pic with SHugden and applauds them

    therefore, JN = CHina

China criticises CTA and calls it a sham,
JN criticises the CTA and calls it a sham,

    therefore, JN = China.

JN calls himself an athiest, self proclaimed popular writer loved by Tibetans inside Tibet,

Chinese communists calls themselves athiest and proclaims that Tibetans in tibet are grateful to China for development and liberation???

    therefore, JN = China..

  26. Why we could not show off ourselves if we have dong some thing deserve for????….Mr JN is the only one who are brave to say what he thinks…feels…observes…etc…still there are bundle of Tibetans they always pretend to be good and keep everything that is harm and hurt to highers … appreciate JN….despite of his ideology is acceptable ….. he is the only hero nowadays in our society….

  27. Mr. JN you are being too early to compare with gendun chomphel and his work! your ancestors (kudrak) are responsible for his prisonment and death! you are contradicting your own stand.

  28. Daveno @ 25,

Many of us have a sneaking suspicions that your master Sikyong Kim Jong Sangay is financed by third party. It is a good sign that the guilt of sleeping with enemy is eating you inside out!

Your master may not have a chance to get out of the holds of United Front – Thabchok Chikgyur – now with his balls in their hands; with all the taped conversation and pictorial evidence. But you are at least trying to tell us the truth. Do you know a thing called Freudian slip?

JN is a hero. And many of us, though do not agree with all things he has to say, but we respect him, and more importantly his right to say what he has to say! And I am not a Shugden follower !

  29. @28, i respect your assumptions & suspicions & conspiratorial skills just as i respect JN story telling skills.
Modern day hero needs to market himself & self glorify and claim his place . shiva! shiva!!..what happend to Yarab zangchoe.

BTW, Who is shugeden…what do i benefit personally from him.

  30. Even all the blind and the deaf all over the world who follows Tibetan issue closely know that Yarab Zangchoe got BANISHED from Tibetan community the day your grand master Sikyong Kim Jong Sangay took power in Dharamsala.

Want proof ? Ask all those molested Tibetan/ inji women. You want us to spill more beans?

There is even a case of sex in the front of the holy life size portrait of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Kashag. Want the name of the married woman with whom he desecrated the sanctity of office with His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s life size portrait?

I think , the less people like you crow the praises of your master, better it is for him. Tolerance has a limit. Don’t think that all of us are dumb fool.

People like you sicken us when you talk about Yarab Zangchoe. Go back to all your more than year long posting on this site attacking other innocent people to promote your grand master. Yarab Zangchoe, your …

  32. No doubt China loved your article since you always critocize His Holiness and CTA.
I have seen your article post in China daily,”congrats you made the cut”.
Though it is hard to get visa to visit Tibet, China might welcome you on the red carpet. You are doing their dirty job. You always manage to divide Tibet, Whenever, we are in critical sitauation. Congrats, you are most radical selfish,Tibetan in modern history who can and will do anything to promote his ideology.

  33. @34 Dordam 59,

thats good! China is taking notice of our democratic process. Thanks to the exercising of true democracy by Jamyang Norbu, China can no longer accuse the tibetans of being brainwashed. You can thank Jamyang Norbu for that. You should be proud and there’s no reason to feel threatened by that.

  34. Dordam59 earlier self-identified himself as Norbu Samphel from Chicago.

He has been lecturing JN and others on this site for a long time now, as if we are some sort of aimless student. Can some one provide some background on this Norbu Samphel from Chicago ?

Where is he getting this holier than thou attitude ? What is his contribution to Tibetan community ? How does he measure up to likes of Jamyang Norbu ? What is his agenda or basis of his hatred for Rangzen followers ?

  35. Dordam59 aka Norbu Samphell of Chicagoo is on board of Tibetan Alliance of Chicago last year. He is another reiliogus fanatic nut case, who dosnt understand meaning of democracy

  36. First of all,
    # 5 and #18 are not mine. Somebody used my nickname. Perhaps, the Real Agu Tonpa words must have been sharp. So, thats why, such a desperate attempts. If you read my comments in JN’s previous article, i have particularly challenged NG who somehow always attack JN as being Kudrak– Now somebody is doing that same thing in my pseudo name.

Anyways, NG- we are same old shit- we used to love JN because he criticized our enemies, now we hate JN because he criticized our friends and the people we like.

    @ #10 Tenzin Chomphel:

I would rather being ME than You— You haven’t understood a bit. All you have is just a hatred and that we are not proud of having one as a Tibetan.
JN has contributed equally to the Tibetan community like Gedhun Choephel, Dhondup Gyal etc, etc, if not more. To me he is the best among the best. But this is my OPINION. The FACT is that he is only Crossword Book Award that make him one of the rare earth material in the Tibetan World.

Why is it so difficult for you people to acknowledge this FACT?

In this context- i would say “Flaunt it if you have it.”

LS was also flaunting his Harvard degree on every occasion. There was nothing wrong with that.

The only difference is that JN is more honest in depicting a true picture.
What i get from his last two writings is that in the Tibetan World:

One section views JN as demo with a horn, Chinese collaborator, Shugdhen propitiator, traitor, anti Dalai Lama, etc.

And another section view JN as Scholar, Honest, insightful, truthful, Patriot, and above all an uncompromising leader and freedom fighter.

Equal Coverage! and that’s the fairest of all. JN haters are all welcome in his blog. Where do you get such freedom? Not even in TGiE Parliament.

    Yours REAL Agu.

  37. Dordam59, with all due respect, you are a pathetic idiot! China Daily loves every controversial issues affecting Tibet, including His Holiness’ friendship with Shoko Asahara. What must make Chinese leaders laugh, however, are subservient fools like you who support blindly whatever the establishment decrees. If tomorrow Dharamshala says that two plus two equals five, you will be the kind of person who will shoot “Indeed!” Beijing is far more scared by Jamyang Norbu and organizations such as the TYC and the newly formed TNC than by Lobsang Sangay and clowns like you. As for Chinese visas, people welcomed on the red Chinese carpet are — if I’m not mistaken — Lodi Gyari, Kelsang Gyaltsen et al. Beijing indeed invited Jamyang Norbu to visit China, but it was probably not with a red carpet and Jamyang Norbu raised his middle finger anyway!

  38. For those of you who do not know Norbu Samphel, a.k.a Dordam59, I will give you an image of who this guy is.

Physically, if one imagine a body of eight year old with a head of Libya’s most hatred dictator Gaddafi with his hair and glasses and all, you will get a correct image of what this puny, but nasty little guy look like.

While in India, he was a teacher and in his alleviated ego, he thinks he was a great teacher. I was a colleague of him and I will give you an snippet of his character.

He used to think that he was the most dedicated teacher in the school. Working behind his colleague, he would go to principal and bad mouth against other teachers, both Indian and Tibetans but mostly Indian teachers.

But what he didn’t know was that principal would tell all the individual teachers about all his supposed to “complaints.” The Indian teachers, especially a very good physical education teacher hit it back on him in a humorous way.

It went something like this. During the morning assembly, students would be running around and teachers, especially P.E. teacher had to herd the students to line-up. All the teachers would be around. Our little Gaddafi in his self -imposed importance with a bag flung across his shoulder would be moving among the students. P.E teacher would say, ” Ma-char( Mosquitos) Line Up. ” Other Indian teachers would say something like, ” Not Ma-char. Chu-wa ( Rats).”

Little Gaddafi never get a sense that P.E. teacher and other Indian teachers were not beating down on students. What they were doing was, they were calling him mosquitos and rats. Such was the image of this guy.

He has a nasty streak and will strike anyone like a poisonous snake who is down is down and under.

Passang@37, can you tell us if the physical image of this guy is close or not. I don’t want to say anything bad about a wrong guy. I have enough information that Dordam59 is same nasty piece of work.

  39. Chela, I think you are very correct. I think there is one more explanation. Why does Norbu Samphell call himself DHORDHAM. In Tibetan meaning is discipliniarian. He is a bully guy who in school and life wants to be control and tyrant on all of us. He is kind of school Genda or diktsu dhordam that principals like Zabdong rimpoche used to make life hell for all of us other students. I think all Tibetans want to be free of these types of rimpocjhes and their chelas diktsu dhordamn who make life hell for us in Tibetan schools and now in our community.

  40. Agu: I won’t be happy even if JN criticize China cos he just lies through through mouth. You believe him which proves how seriously inellectual you are. JN’s fact for Tibetand independence does not cover Cholkam sum. It only covered the land ruled by kudras from lhasa. His timing is dead wrong about independence. Tibet collapsed since 9th century, since then there was never a Tibet that comprised of the entire cultural Tibet. Maybe JN go back and rewrite his so called facts. Agu, you have a habit of forcing your imagined view onto others, I hope I made my views clear here. If you want a rebuttal, come out with intellectual backup. Come out with a comprehensive history of Tibet that covers the entire cultural greater Tibet. Remember and honest to your exile history about Tibet. Imperial Tibet was indeed a powerful empire and governed the entire Tibetan plateau. Fought with China, Turks, and other nno longer existed empires for controlling the lucrative silk road. Tibetans even went so far as Chinese capital Chang An. After Udom Tsenpo, Tibet got collapsed and never regained in physical size.
Later, differnt dynasties came into been, such as Sakya, Rinpung, Tsangpa, and Ganden Podrang. Throughout the history of these small dynasties, amdowas and khampas never factored in. You only study politics of kudras and their cronies. Sadly, their abuse of power and wealth were not recorded and almost banned from societal discussion. Thus, we have to rely on foreiner research aout the ugly legacy of lords and aristocrats. In this factual light, JN never said a honest word, he is rather a sensational propagandist with no clear route to goal. I once attended a talk by JN, he declared that Tibetans should fight for independence for U-Tsang, ignore kham and amdo. However, he said we should keep claiming in the meantime. I know, by now your blooding gushing through your view and you are about to brand me as traitor! I only request for you is, what is your historical evidence for independent Tibet for the entire plateau?

    NG

  41. Lhamo33: The problem with Tibetans is that exile Tibetans do not get the correct picture what are Tibetans within Tibet are up to and how they manage to keep the culture alive within given PRC policies which are not that bad as far as preservation of culture is concern. Same with Tibetans within Tibet see everything is being done from outside Tibetans and every Tibetan engage with Tibetan moments which is not true. More and more refugees are now voluntarily assimilated into mainstream only few few people work for exile institutions like CTA. And you attribute everything wrong to it. Blame the leaders who has the charge not the institution. How can we overcome this black and white mental garnishing? A lot of things are grey because they evolve and never remain constant. Do any one has anything to say to this?

  42. NG: Try to be bot so obvious when you post under multiple IDs. It does not become your great intelligence.

  44. NG42: It is a grave mistake rather blunder if you think Tibet (Including all three provinces) can’t be independent nation/state because there is seemingly no historical evidence that will support in today’s world. If you interpret, Tibet’s history in the light of 19th century western legalistic terms, you find only few Independent nations of UN will qualify. In that concept, territorial sovereignty is the key to qualify as independent nation which purely a 19th and early 20th century European phenomenon. If you look at human evolutionary history, in contrary to the territoriality, much of the time has been struggled over domination over a nation or people. This is true to Asian history and more so to Tibetan history. Except for brief period under Mongolain empire, until 1959, Tibet remain Independent or free nation without any direct subjugation, if we interpret Tibetan history as per its time and context. In fact this view/model has now been increasingly gaining significance even in the west.

  45. It was Wrong what few people did to You in 1985,but lets not romanticise Yourself and talk about Yourself as if You Are a hero.Nobody is perfect, everything You say cant be right,You were right then,You are wrong now,Because i smell revenge in ur articles.then whats the difference between you and them?

  46. Indeed, it is futile to blame our history, nobody would have done it better so we better own it up and move ahead.

  47. If we to speak of the history of Kham in relation to their chiefs, it was not pretty. The treatment meted out to khampa people by their elites were not any better than the Lhasa Kudras, and in many cases worse. As a whole though, I don’t see the type of ghastly crimes Tibetan elites, weather from Kham or Lhasa or from any region of Tibet exercised compared to the atrocities committed by other societies of the world in the last 100 years.

  48. Dawa Tsering, did you get beating from your chief? because i never heard of any treatment like you mentioned of Khampa people. I know there is lot of inner tribal fighting and killing which is not good but its different kind.

  49. Thokmay #47 who the fuck are you to direct how JN should react to whatever was done to him whenever?! You are but a speck of dust compare to JN, he is ver much a hero to many of us.

  50. Thokmey #52 – if you have read your world history, “eye popping” is mild compared to heads being lobbed off in many nation’ s history. And what has being Kudrak anything to “eye popping”. What is the point of your silly comments here? Are you trying to make us change our minds about our hero? You might as well say JN ‘s legendary ‘stache is fake!

  51. @ 52,
one kudrak eye popped another kudrak, so? All tibetans and even Inji’s know both the good and the bad. your repeating over and over again the same old propaganda of CCP chinese.

  52. Dear Mr.Norbula,
Me and my family have just finished watching your interview on voa and we truly felt sorrowful and astonished by how cta has barred and harassed you from voicing yourself. On behalf of my family, we feel truly grateful to have such an eminent and genuine Tibetan person like you. As an aspiring writer, I feel very inspired by determination and presistence. Thank you for all your contributions to Tibet and you’ll be forever remembered as the voice of truth by the Tibetan people. Please continue your diligent work. We thank you from the bottom of our heart. You are one great figure in the Tibetan history.
    Bod-rangzen!
    Love,
    Dolma family from New York

  53. JN la
I really appreciate your each and every word. Did you think about how we will get our Tibet independence? Tell share us like H.H. Dalai lama. given speech in USA.

  54. @ tsering dorjee, agreed! I am Like a dust compare to JN,and JN is like a dust compare to HH.are You guys trying to tell me JN is more intelligent than HH?well his english is better for sure.

  55. Twice HH has mentioned that Middleway is a failure and it was the truth. It is a failure because it was based on undue exuberance of good faith and naivety – encouraged by people with vested interest. Now it is a fact that it was a lie and ruse to trick our gullible leader. Now he can’t back out as the medals keep piling. How can he now back away now?

  56. If we give up Rangzen what support do we need from others and for what? To own houses and build Dharma centers and get rich? We can do that living in exile.

  57. Tibetans in Tibet who agree with the Chinese premise that Tibet remain part of Chin a are doing fine. It’s the ones who don’t agree with that who are getting discriminated against, tortured, getting killed, or burning themselves or languishing in prisons.

  58. Thokmay #62
Typical of you guys putting words into people’s mouth! I never mentioned HH in my comments and you accuse me of saying JN is greater than HH? That’s how your types operate, when you don’t like what you hear you shout “he’s a Chinese spy and he hates HH! Let’s go beat him up! Come on amalas, let’s go and do the pang-den dhup dhup thing to him!” If you guys had your way you’d be no better than the Taliban. Anyway, you might not be a spect because I don’t know you, my point is, if you write crap other can do the same. So, Do unto others as you have them do unto you… peace out!

  59. Jamyang Norbu among the Great intellectuals like Gedun Choephel and Rangdrol (Dhondup Gyal)? Its a complete FARCE. The Cartoonist might have lost his mind! And He’s among the three Norbu? Its kinda make me laugh. Jamyang can’t even write and express his thoughts in Tibetan language. He’s disgrace to Tibetan writers.

  60. I am pretty sure now,Shudgen followers and CCP paid workers are commenting on this blog pretending to be rangzen walas.

  61. What’s wrong with Shudgen followers? Even if they do go to Chinese they have at least an excuse. It’s because their society rejected and ostracized them.

If you read the real history of how Shugden came to be you will began to feel more sympathy for him.

My understanding is that in the 16th Century there was highly realized monk who was adept in philosophy who was loved and revered by the people. Since he was becoming so popular people from the then government got worried and had him killed him by stuffing khatas down his throat. The monk was so shocked at this injustice that he prayed to be born to take revenge for this. If this story is true we are merely receiving our karma club. Lets not accumulate more negative karma by pursuing him to the spirit world. If our people just left him alone to pursue his enlightenment we would have had one more Buddha.

I hope the younger generation Tibetans are more tolerant and more (genuinely) compassionate specially towards the Shugden people.

The more you wave the Shugden name around the more it shows that the Buddhism we follow is not the one that Buddha prescribed.

We can spend our energy demonizing and ostracizing an “imagined” enemy while the real one is dancing in glee.

  62. Thokmay, you are right anybody could be commenting on this blog, that’s the beauty of it. Why, our Sikyong might be posting comments here under a pseudonym, who knows. You don’t want JN to censor this blog, do you? He could you know, after all he is paying for it. This should tell you the type of person he is – like Clint Eastwood he strides to the middle of the street and shoots and lets any damn fool hiding behind false names to shoot back. JN just shrugs these off and twirls his legendary moustache prepares for the next draw in the name of Rangzen!

  63. Dawa, religious freedom and freedom from ostracization, i will defend to the end. But, please we need some boundary. otherwise, why you shouting about Rangzen and then same time so easy to condone the shugden people going to CCP. what is the point? If anybody who feels attacked and ostracised is running to China – sooner or later we have no Tibetan left.
And from what i know the monk was not considered as realized. He is very learned and adept and all that. please keep in mind that realized being cannot think about something like taking revenge. its impossible. From what i know, He is just like you and me but with much more learning and knowledge.so please be careful what you write here- like saying he is realized and same time saying he vowed to avenge the injustice. it doesnt work like that. I agree with you how horrible it might have been to be murdered that way- its horrible!just like how the Geshe and his attendants were murdered in Dharamsala. But really enough of all this revenge thing. lets get back to the basics of Buddhism.

  64. #69 Bhod Rangzen I don’t condone anyone compromising Tibetan Independence. I will restate. These people AT LEAST have an excuse. (Where as CTA to which Six million Tibetans entrusted Tibetan sovereignty does not have that excuse.)
Seriously I don’t believe any Shugden people turn to the Chinese. It’s most probably one of those unfounded accusations malicious concoctions that some of the sheep in our society are good at. Om Many pay me hung! Hypocrites.
Highly realized is not the same as enlightened. My point was not the theological question of his spiritual level. It’s about the injustice. Crime committed by those in power cannot be compared to those committed by loose cannons.

  65. # 67 Dawa- I too agree that the ‘genesis’ of Shugden deity started around that period – 16th century. The highly learned monk in question was a contemporary of the 5th Dalai Lama. Being very learned and highly skilled in religious debates does not equal to being realized or enlightened from what I gather. There will be elements of pride and false self importance. And as you wrote it reveals in the learned monk’s last aspiration – revenge.
#70 – If you look at the larger picture of our history – going back couple of centuries – many such injustices and ‘crimes’ of persecutions were committed in the name of religion by the central power. One’s that was much more severe – let’s leave it @ that.

  66. times have changed, our sacred mantra ‘Om Mani Padme Huun’ has become ‘Om Money Pay Me Soon’, Rangzen is a dirty word and collecting Chinese Citizenship through the Middle Way Approach with a straight face is the new thing.

  67. # 71 SO by that reasoning are you saying that it’s okay for us compassionate Tibetan Buddhists to do it less severely to Shugden followers of today? DO you think it’s okay to just leave it at that? Is this indifference because we ourselves are not being subjected to this treatment? Or are they less human than us?
How is it that we, who are victims of persecution, can be so callous about others?
If we are half the human beings we should be we will feel dirty that CTA is discriminating certain section of our society in our names.

  68. # 73 – when i wrote and said ‘lets leave it @ that’ – i meant that i did NOT want to make my small piece of writing ALL about the persecutions and near annhilation of certain sects in history during that period. Just a brief mention to bring things in perspective.
THAT my friend was the point. I’m sorry that u read it the wrong way.
But I am sorry that you have had to suffer and be persecuted . People just went overboard. As far as I know i have heard that when certain monastaries were banned by Tibetan shopkeepers there were monastaries of other sects who were the ‘good samaritans’ and opened their stores for fellow monastics and Tibetans.

  69. Well it turns out, being born and schooled in the west doesn’t necessarily mean you are immune to superstitious nonsense. In fact, you might actually feel compelled to protest for one form superstitious nonsense against another. You might actually be compelled to instill fear and suspicion among your fellow countymen. 70. This week on the VOA talk show, Jamyang Norbu la was the guest and many questions were asked by the host. One thing that stuck in my mind that I believe could be helpful in our ongoing discussion is that, “CRITIQUE THE ARGUMENT OR THE POINT HE IS TRYING TO MAKE IF YOU DISAGREE. PERSONAL ATTACK SHOULD BE AVOIDED.”
It is so silly when I read some of the above post, calling him Kudra, Chinese dog, shugden sympathizer etc.
PLEASE TRY TO STAY ABOVE THE FRAY.

  71. #74
Thanks. Sorry if I misunderstood what you wrote.

“But I am sorry that you have had to suffer and be persecuted.”
I am not a Shugden worshiper.

  72. #75
Thanks! I saw the interview. Its inspiring and we are lucky to have Jamyang Norbu la among us. He can write as well as talk. I have heard people criticizing him for not knowing Tibetan but he has rich Tibetan vocabulary and he speaks Tibetan with better diction than most of those people.

  73. I am glad that VOA interview jamyang norbu la and it sends a powerful message to RFA.
nobody had question hhdl on rights to express his view. It was also interesting to see his advise in Madison.
Jamyang la speaking tibetan is so inspiring and I love that kind of way of speaking. It is so sexy.

  74. I don’t believe shugden or for that matter nechung. But I believe like any highsholar in western v
Country what we did this religious sect is very shameful.

  75. I agree with melvien Goldstein and others about heinos crime of lords and lamas. They shoud bbe tried in Hague.

Thanks western scholars, we the Tibetans have been so dumb for centurries….plz bring Jesus to Tibet

    NG

  76. Funny how Tibetans dont seem to understand that the Shugden issue is bigger than the Tibetan community (NKT is international for instance) The issue is about the preservation of the Buddhas teaching in its purity for the world, for generations to come
Maybe stop seeing the DL as a Tibetan and start seeing him as an important Buddhist who cares about future generations regardless of their ethnic origin, enough to open himself up to criticism for the sake of the greater good
As they say “if you want to make an omelette, youve got to break a few eggs”

  77. You with some Shugten people become closer is sad thing, I think you have no idea what shugten sprit is about.

  78. When all else fails, play the shugden card. Long ago, we accused such people as being bought by Taiwan until Dharamsala got the taste of Taiwan money. Then we accused them of being on China’s side until Dharamsala decided to be part of China. Infact, in these pages, you hear “Rangzen walla” as a label in similar fashion to “Shugden walla”, It appears when all else failed, labelling anyone who challenges Dharamsala’s vision for Tibet as Shugden supporters is a very dangerous game.

Trying to connect JN to Shugden is as low as it gets. As much as I support His Holiness, attacking Jamyang Norbu as being anti-Dalai Lama is also just as ridiculous.

  79. I think it’s not a bad idea to bring Jesus to Tibetans because most Tibetans have a sheep- shepherd temperament. Buddhism is more suited to the inquiring minds which are found mostly in the west.

  80. Jamyang la,

You have been very outspoken about RFA issue. Now, what’s up? Tethong TN got the post and you were quiet. Is it because you guys belong to the same blood line or is it same old politics that you got an RFA interview. Enlighten us.

  81. Dawa Norbu is missing!
Some of those contemporary figures depicted in the cartoon are often called “new thinkers” by their critics. They do seem to represent a trend of thought that might appear not only “new” but also defiant to the “main stream Tibetan-intelligentsia circle” (see online: Qi Wu).

From the cartoon, it seems that the “new thinkers” in exile and back in home are beginning to recognize one another. This interaction must be viewed as a kind of positive sign in many respects, including the issue such as rebuilding a “modern Tibet”.

  83. I would say Jamyang Norbu posing a picture with Shugden guy is not reasonable to accuse him of supporting Shugden. I am not against the Shugden society and followers and specially outcasting them from Tibetan society is shocking. Anyway those actions are stern reply to intolerable crimes perpetrated by some followers like murdering, beating, threatening and destroying which is clear to many Tibetans.
But Jamyang Norbu’s a morally degenerated moron who use his writing skills to bullshit youngsters under the banner of Independence he don’t believe and care. Its clear that he tried vainly to promote his cousin during election and criticise His Holiness while drinking coffee in US. If he really care, why can’t he go to India and lead the youths sacrificing his comfortable life and wealth his forefathers accumulate exploiting common Tibetans. He should sell all those estates and give back to rightful Tibetans.

  84. JN coming to US is a recent phenomenon. He was is in India and had served the TGiE since the early 60’s. You are either ignorant or in denail of his contribution to our govt. and the people. JN Regularly goes to india to talk to our youngsters and the freedom fighter- Rangzen lovers. But, as saying goes, You can only take the horse to the water but cannot make him.

Foolish Youngster will never be fooled by JN because he doesn’t give long life initiation or other religious rituals.

Intelligent Youngster will always get inspired by JN no matter where he is as long as we get to read his article. We discuss ideas and always tries to understanding the core issues without emotions and blind faith. And we are also getting enlightened by JN’s vast knowledge of Tibet, China and the exile world.

Thats why, we love JN- Without his writing our exile life is so so so boring if not so so so disgusted by all the nonsense thats been going on all these years in Dahramsala. After all, we have only one brave Tibetan soul who is equally tough on Dharamsala as well as on China.

There are many Tibetans who can write like JN and has more flashy resume and degrees than JN. But, none as brave, honest, wholesome and knowledgeable as him. Above all, JN has an impeccable record of Integrity.

Those who hate him must hate those qualities.

    Think Differently!

    Yours AGU

  85. Agu la, Wholeheartedly agree. JN la is to be treasured for being brave enough to call it like it is. And from their meddling in RFA, looks like the CTA (Communist Tibetan Authority) are out to silence JN la once and for all at Beijing’s behest.

  86. #96,
nothing really insightful in Mr Sumtsul’s post. nothing new that i haven’t already read here again and again. one thing struck me was that he managed to write this whole thing without one mention of the supreme. thats very interesting.
    thanks TCL.

  87. #96
To give an analogy of what I felt on reading this piece is a long and wonderful foreplay that didn’t quite make it to orgasm. Sorry there is no other example I can think of right now.

There is no denying it is one of the best, well thought out piece by a Tibetan but the ending is left wanting.

“This will entail working with and from within the CTA, not against it as they seem to be doing most of the time. Just having yearly conferences and gatherings, and episodically crying foul from the sidelines will not suffice. If these individuals and organizations are genuine in their quest, they must, sooner rather than later, start grooming their own Chitue candidates, who, in turn, should seek direct democratic mandate from the people for the political vision they champion.” When the lone Chithue who expressed his support for Rangzen got a “smack down” in the form of His Holiness’s repudiations in Selagura one cannot pretend that there is a playing field, let alone a level one. I hardly think the critics feel they are working “against” CTA. And if they are asked to work “within” CTA it is a sure way of silencing them for they will become part of the machine.

  88. I think this is the same writer who earlier (literally) issued the olde English bann on Tibetan bloggers and online commentators.
Here he comes down with almost the same message.
But he is nevertheless a serious and extremely articulate writer.

  89. Well written article– i like it. But, he lacks some inside knowledge. i must add here:

As long as His Holiness keep rooting for the middle way approach, referendum will be of no use. He should remain neutral– only then we can make some changes from within. Recently founded Tibetan National Congress was an attempt to elect our own chithus. With many of the chithus openly joining the group, the Dharamsala establishment was scared and soon attacking the Rangzen group by making His Holiness speak for them. Consequently, All those coward chithus (except few) withdrew- some even criticised Jamnor- and distance themselves from the rangzen group. Even Tenzin Tsundru was quiet and obiviously scare. Thats why, the survival of rangzen movement and the ability to change something from within is close to impossible with present scenario.
    Yours AGU

  90. PLEASE, NO TROJAN HORSE IN TYC.

In the early 1970’s when the US president Nixon
and his National security Adviser-Kissinger- began to flirt with Mao Tsetung for China’s friendship,Mao was free to draw his wish list. One of them,of course, was that America should dump even its limping support to Tibet Issue into garbage altogether.
This development, in addition to continued snipping from the Kuomintang regime in Taiwan, the already fragile Tibetan exile set up in India was coming under increasing pressure to keep up its basic objective.
With this backdrop, a group of Tibetan youths, who had modest modern education and were working in the Tibetan government in exile or TGiE, apparently conceived the idea of calling a convention of Tibetan youths,in 1970,to explore possibilities of salvaging the sagging fortune of TGiE.
The meeting was a huge success in terms of participation, the quality of deliberation and the conduct of the participants. So the convention produced much light with the least heat. Out of this unexpected success the Tibetan Youth Congress was born on7th.October,1970 in Dharamshala – a northern Indian town in the foothill of Himalaya.
Since then during the last 40 plus years, the TYC has,in its unassuming and sincere way, been the vanguard in various areas of the Tibetan people’s struggle against the Chinese occupation of Tibet.
In those days His Holiness had been saying that the Tibet Issue was straightforward case of political question with many ramifications – issues of ethnics, culture, religion, social, security and freedom. The TYC made a pledge to follow the guidance of the His Holiness in the context that the Tibetan struggle was political in its core.
Now His Holiness, in his wisdom, has changed the priority in 360 degrees but the TYC has not for reasons it sees important. Therefore that pledge now appears to be a contradiction of a sort,at least on the surface. We can argue endlessly and try to pass the bug to one another. Will such an act serve our basic purpose? Unlikely! On the contrary, China may have the last laugh!
Of course it is best if there is not even a semblance of contradiction. But in the larger picture such a seeming gap will unlikely to endanger our unity unless unity is equated to the idea of “my way or no way.”
However, perhaps this gap can be best abridged if His Holiness,in his wisdom, chooses to speak to the leadership of TYC and other prominent Tibet Independence advocators in private but in free and frank manner. But most probably somebody will shout such an interaction is uncalled for or even a sacrilege. Well, but if His Holiness thinks it’s OK a “talk-in-audience” can take place. Or else let them run the full course in advancing our struggle a point where their good sense will prevail what to do. I am of the opinion that they are not blind to other options. They are also people with sense and patriotism!

In all fairness, the attainability of independence is indeed a huge a challenge in a world that might rules over the truth, or at least for the time being.
On the other hand, Gandhiji said“if you aim at the sky,you may reach the top of a tree and if you aim at the top of a tree, you will always remain on the ground”.

The success of the Middle Way (MW)is equally next to impossibility under the present circumstance because consistently refuses to acknowledge even the existence of the Tibet Issue. The Chinese logic for non-acceptance of MW is that how there could be a means to resolve an issue when there is no issue at all. So,it looks,at best Beijing may accept the label but not the substance of MW as a face-saving device of us to accept the status duo in ditto.

So are we prepared to spin our way into such a situation and claim the success of MW by diluting the definition MW from its starting point to its present status and still further down?
Unfortunately,an impression is being created that the failure of MW is somehow due to the opposition to MW by section of us in exile. It is not true.
The Chinese government fully knows, other concerned governments, like the US government, know clearly, His Holiness the Dalai Lama knows without doubt and the Tibetan people including the Tibet Independence advocators know well enough that the His Holiness had full authority and intention to deliver his part of the bargain on the basis of MW. Butit failed. The ball is squarely in the court of CCP of China! And not in the office of the TYC, please.

It is unjustifiable to blame the TYC for the failure of MW till now. And in future, the stand of TYC will not be stumbling block if,for any reason, China starts to take MW seriously. If TYC does, then it may be time to question the TYC’s responsibility.

If we are able to put aside the dirty power politics of jockeying for power, positioning for favorable slots, clash of big egos, credit- hunting and self-promotion,I think,we can discover that the TYC is not enemy of MW (the assassin of MW is China). In fact, its position could be a sort of the last resort if bad goes to worse. Are we predetermined that such a scenario is fully ruled out?

Well, even in the absence of sovereignty,if we cannot save ourselves politically to some degree,we cannot,in reality, save our other cherished demands except, perhaps, the Buddhism in its original form. That is to say minus its overreach in politics in our case.Buddhism does not need only Tibetans to save it.It is independently is cable to take care of itself judging from its history of over two and a half millennia.

    Gyaltsen Wangchuk

  91. 101 Tashi Tsering la,
Who is getting brainwashed? i hope it is not you. Please don’t let anybody wash your brain– neither from me nor from others. One most dangerous people from whom you can get brainwashed is from the religious right— So, be careful although many of us already got brainwashed that long life initiation will prolong our life. Does it ring bell?

It defies the law of karma!

    Yours Agu

  92. Hey Agu: Indian shutdown your campaign in India against Chinese Premeir Like Qiang and omitted Tibet from joint statent. What are you and your type rangzen wallas doing? Enjoyed opium and lived in the venth heaven and discussed your rangzen in an empty room with a lot of fantasy and self-comforting boast? Oh ya….world largest democracy, your exile host with unlimited freedom, shutdown freedom of movement and expression for coupe of days…….I hope you will go to India Gate and shout for your rights, freedom, democracy and so forth against Indiangovernment. If you are an citizen due to your hybrid biology or naturalized, take the Indian government to court……

    REALITY bite in your butt!

    NG

  93. What rangzen wallas doing for rangzen these days except click few words on internet? Getting on usual life? worried with rents, wife, kids, cars, latest gadgets, and all the worldly needs? Or you must be rooting somewhere in the himalays to give a big confrontations? I guress your quality if not the type of sacrificing life, but enjoy all your senses and abuse democracy nad liberty……..I think in hearts of your hearts, you knew reality bits in your butt. Oh yea…..some white men is leading the debate in such an uncivil and desperate attack where you looses your academic honesty. Rangzen wallas are like prostitute…..they can be taken to bed by anyone as long as they support to an utopian idea…..

    Ng

  94. NG, you’re so rite! we, middle way walas, are doing so much in support of middle way! We are doing … ahem… uh… – in fact what are we doing apart sucking up to his holiness?

  95. @Gyaltsen: Middle way do not want Tibetans to take up arms to fight Chinese because it is futile attempt, self-defeating, and self-suicide. Just waiting for a magic of China falling is not a wise option either because Tibet is systematically changing every day when you are ignorantly fucking with your empty free Tibet safely abroad. Therefore, it deals with multilateral communications with Chinese from Government to general people to Buddhist population to especially to Tibetan Buddhist followers. It makes something out of nothing under this situation. Under that policy, at least there is acknowledgment from governments around the world express concern for the situation and express support for middle-way for dialogue (every country, even the powerful one, even Indian, your host country, recognize Tibet Autonomous region is part of people republic of China, not the entire Tibet because other part of Tibet is already absorbed into Chinese long time ago and ruled by Chinese local war lords for centuries).

What are rangzen wallas stretegies? Except shouting, what are they doing? Oh yea…they hold conferences once or twice a year….and a big rally once a year, that is foregone conclusion of 10th March, what else? Local RTYC’s have a calendar for the year, there are around 8 demonstrations, that too attract no more than 15 people at each gathering…..who are they? Old people with forced kids to attend……then the question is, what else they do for rangzen? NOthing….they storm parties in larger number strength than a mere few hours demonstrations. Do you think these people will lay down their lives for Tibet that they have never seen and disconnected culturally, physically, and psychologically? Chances are zero. You might come with an argument exiles self-immolated too, but put those persons under microscopic zoom, all of them are from Tibet, just came to India to His Holinessvor already exiled in the early 60’s. Thuptenn Ngodup, Jamphel Phuntsok, and the monk in Nepal Recently arrived from Tibet. Which exile born sacrificed life? The anwser is absolute none……out of all this self-comforting dramas, Tibetans suffers because of pseudo-political activism in diaspora…..but Tibetans inside don’t know that out of their suffering, exiled folks gain the most benefit, Canadian and US governments give more visa for immigration, Australian government gives immigration visas to political prisoners and their families. And those who cannot get visa, they forge stories and make use of stories of Tibetans inside to boost their chances of gaining a legal status.

OK, lets come back to rangzen. What are they doing in real and what are their strategies? Except conference, shouting, letter writing, and other small campaigning. They are doing nothing. Do you think a country can gain independence by exercising you right to conference, shout, and then wait and debate among yourself in tea houses in a foreign democratic country? Nothing such thing happened in the world history. What else rangzen wallas doing and what are their arguments? Picking up few quotes and sanitize it and sensationalize it, that is their strategy…….the core meaning is, they want Tibetans inside to take up arms or revolt in larger numbers, so they will be happy because it boost their selfish idealism. You know what…..I don’t want any Tibetans die for your crooked belief in rangzen which is impossible. We already how China randomly and atrociously handled in 2008 while we are just shouting and be safe. I will only take you seriously, when you go to Tibet and prove your word and fight the red Chinese…..otherwise, shut the hell up, it does not serve any purposes. Don’t bombard me with history, democracy, freedom, liberty, and so forth, because I know it all better than you or any rangzen talkers. I just know such exercise itself is a self-defeating and futile rather than helpful in any ways. Regarding middle-pathers sucking up to His Holiness….I did not and I don’t suck anybodies balls to that matter. I just see the reality bite in your butt just like Indian government shut down your campaign, it is a historic move son. When DL is gone forever, be prepared for shutting down CTA and exiles nightmare will come…..just prepare for it. I can sense it and smell it for a long time, the situation is moving in that direction as I envisioned. Regarding me, I actually did more by leaving our Youth Congress of local chapter than staying this inactive and empty organizations. People often use it as a scapegoat and internal politics are ugly as hell. Don’t push me….because I saw both worlds, Tibet, China, India, American, Youth Youth Congress, and of course our dull and do nothing middle-pathers. Rangzen wallas are truly fucked up animals. Yea, disclosure: after leaving RTYC, I was one of the founder of Chinese and Tibetan college student friendship conference, this happened even before HHDL encouraged publicly, at least I did not hear it. After that, you know what? People always encourage you to continue it….yea of course, what about you continue it? The platform is open, son! It is our cause, not my cause alone…..This is fucked society with fucked people with fucked up minds even the middle pathers. What do you hope from such a society irrespective political inclinations?

  96. Revised version means extended version of above posting:

Middle way do not want Tibetans to take up arms to fight Chinese because it is futile attempt, self-defeating, and self-suicide. Just waiting for a magic of China falling is not a wise option either because Tibet is systematically changing every day when you are ignorantly fucking with your empty free Tibet safely abroad. Not talking to Chinese people is not even an option because ultimately Tibetans and Chinese people have to solve the issue irrespective of which Mandarins rule from Beijing, autocrats, technocrats, dictators, liberal democrats, communist, and so forth. Therefore, it deals with multilateral communications with Chinese from all walks of lives, from Government to general people to Buddhist population to especially to Tibetan Buddhist followers; from enganging activists to scholars to students. It makes more sense talking to your enemies rather than not talking and having no other alternative and leverages to force Chinese to come and talk to us. It makes something out of nothing under this situation. Under this policy, at least there is acknowledgment from governments around the world express concern for the situation and express support for middle-way for dialogue (every country, even the powerful ones, even Indian Government, your host country, recognize Tibet Autonomous region is part of people republic of China, not the entire Tibet because other part of Tibet is already absorbed into Chinese long time ago and ruled by Chinese local war lords for centuries or some pars has nothing to do with Tibetean Government, but indepedent itself). More importantly, liberal Chinese and academecians see middle path as a reasonable compromise and support it. Who is supporting rangzen? No government since inception of exile, only handful of Chinese scholars such as Cao Chang Qing, Weijing Sheng, and Harry Wu. All these people are outside the People’s Republic and have no stake in Chinese politics or influence in politics on the mainland. Also a thing to be noted is, when they talk of Indepedent Tibet and right for Independence is limited to U-Tsang where Gangden Podrang has political jurisdiction before 1950. Better keep up with correct history and undertand the terms in politico-historical context rather than extrapolating to entire Tibetan plateau. What then our rangzen wallas doing for Tibet outside Tibetan community? Nothing! Are they have the guts to talk to Chinese on the same table…..no. Why? Because Chinese are not interested in such a topic and see no threat from such a infringe group who did not see China or Tibet, who just indulge in intellectual exercise and have no stake in real and no power to change China as a whole. Oh yea….we have couple of white scholars and laymen are tooting their horn in support of independent Tibet such as Eliot Sperling from Indiana university at a department of central Eurasian study, a former student of Taktse Rinpoch and buddy of Jamyang Norbu! What else and who else? Nothing, nothing, nothing!!!

What are rangzen wallas strategies? Except shouting, what are they doing? Oh yea…they hold conferences once or twice a year….and a big rally once a year, that is a foregone conclusion of 10th March, what else? They to write some articles and now created a website called Tibetan Political Review and Jamyang Norbu’s blog. What else? Local RTYC’s have fixed activities for each calendar year, there are around 8 demonstrations, that too attract no more than 15 people at each gathering except March 10th which attract around 2000 people out of around 7000-8000! Super attendance!…..who are attendees for non March 10th protest? Old people with forced kids or directly arrived from Tibet and couple of organizers who are mostly born in exile. Then the question is, what else do they do for rangzen? Nothing….they storm parties in larger number strength than a mere few hours demonstrations. They critisize HHDL and CTA in writing than Chinese rules in Tibet. Dude, priorities are shifted long time ago, be it personal or national. Do you think these people will lay down their lives for Tibet that they have never experienced and seen Tibet; disconnected from Tibet culturally, physically, psychologically, and even linguistically? As time moves on, even racially discconnected from being ruddy faced Tibet, we are on the journey to melting pot, not finished in assimillation, but moving in that direction (Knowledgement: this issue deals with racism, but we have to debate it candidly if Tibet need some kind of solution and we believe we have to fight for it for a long time to come, then we need real people, not 10%, 25%, or 50% Tibetan because Chinese will think you dont have the right to represent and talk because you yourself are full Tibetan, here lies the problem). In such a circumstance, what is the chances of gaining Rangzen? Chances are absolute zero. You might come with an argument that exiles self-immolated too, but put those persons under microscopic zoom, you will notice all of them are from Tibet, just came to India to see His Holinessv or already exiled in the early 60′s like Thuptenn Ngodup. Jamphel Phuntsok and the monk in Nepal are recently arrived from Tibet. Which exile born sacrificed life for Tibet? The anwser is absolute none……out of all this self-comforting dramas, real Tibetans in Tibet suffer unimaginatively because of pseudo-political activism in diaspora. The fact is Tibetans inside don’t know that out of their suffering, exiled folks gain the most benefit and do nothing. Canadian and US governments give more visa for exile Tibetan immigration, Australian government gives immigration visas to political prisoners and their families. Those who cannot get visa, they forge personal stories by using stories of Tibetans inside to boost their chances of gaining a legal status.

OK, lets come back to rangzen. What are they doing in real and what are their strategies? Except conference, shouting, letter writing, and other small campaigning. They are doing nothing. Do you think a country can gain independence by exercising your right to conference, shout, and then wait and debate among yourself in tea houses in a foreign democratic country where there is no direct or indirect threat as long as the discussion falls within the framework of lagality? Nothing such thing happened in the world history. What else rangzen wallas doing and what are their arguments? Picking up few quotes, first sanitize it, then sensationalize it, and then shoot it on the internet and in argument. That is their strategy…….The core strategy is, they want Tibetans inside to take up arms or revolt in larger numbers, so they will be happy because it boost their soundness of selfish idealism for personal politics. You know what…..Middle Way, for that matter I don’t want any Tibetans die for your crooked belief in rangzen which is impossible and for which you are doing nothing except aforementioned accassional activities in a foreign land, that too done with permission from local government or police department and under police escort and supervision. We already saw how China randomly and atrociously handled in 2008 while we are just shouting and be safe with few tear drops. I will only take you seriously, when you go to Tibet and prove your word and fight the red Chinese. Or gett support from international communities of governments and especially debating with Chinese in real time. Otherwise, shut the hell up, it does not serve any purposes. Don’t bombard me with history, democracy, freedom, liberty, or attacking me habouring sense of cynism and defeatism because I know it all better than you or any rangzen talkers. I just know such exercise itself is a self-defeating and futile rather than helpful in any practical ways. Regarding middle-pathers sucking up to His Holiness….I did not and I don’t suck anybodies balls to that matter. I just see the reality bite in your butt just like Indian government shut down your campaign recently, it is a historic and unprecedented move. Son, think deeply and rationally, where is your political sitution in the world today. When DL is gone forever, be prepared for shutting down CTA that takes care of exiles welfare. Exiles nightmare will come when lease for settlement is over and you are asked either to leave or to pay huge amount of money to stay…..just prepare for it. I can sense it and smell it for a long time. The situation is moving in that direction as I envisioned. Regarding me, I actually did more by leaving our Youth Congress of local chapter than staying in this inactive and empty organization. People often use it as a scapegoat and internal politics are ugly as hell at the highest level of TYC, Dhondup Dorjee versus Tsewang Rinzin, then there is the x-president from Nepal. Don’t push me, dude….because I saw the worlds where Tibet is concerned: Tibet, China, India, America, Europe, Youth Congress, and of course our dull and do nothing middle-pathers. Rangzen wallas are truly fucked up animals because their action actually benefitting China than exiles themselves. China dont need to spend millions to create factions in exile society. As Jamyang once declared, he is personally denounced by then Tibet Autonomous Party Secretary, and he took pride in it. How childish! Today, Mandarins are toasting wines and happy that JN and his crooks are “useful idiots” who get nothing but doing the dirty job they wanted dearly. Yea, disclosure: after leaving RTYC, I was one of the founder of Chinese and Tibetan college student friendship conference. This happened even before HHDL encouraged it publicly, at least I did not hear it. After that, you know what? People always encourage you to continue it….yea of course, what about you continuing it? The platform is open, son! It is our cause, not my cause alone…..This is fucked society with fucked people with fucked up minds even the middle pathers. What do you hope from such a society, irrespective of political inclinations? Do you think we gain rangzen or rangjong when you do nothing but internal fighting? Do you think when your sisters and brother, sons and daughters, are loosing Tibetan genes will help in preservation of Tibetan struggle? Do you think Tibet gain independence or rangjong when your children cannot speak Tibetan? Do you think Tibet gain independence or rangjong when you and your kids are not only culturally, linguistically, socially, and physically disconnected and dislocated from land of snow, worse handicapped? I think NO! Because there is no source and sound rationality for pride, enthusiam to fight even safely in the long run, forget sacrificing life for Tibet because there is no personal returns. All these actually what Chinese government’s strategist wanted and planned (sounds like conspiracy theory, yea!), and we are doing what they wanted. They can enforce that in Tibet through pseudo legal framework of People’s Republic, but cannot enforce in exile. However, we are helping them out happily under the pretext of democracy, free spirit, liberty, freedom to sex partner and racism………(lol…excuse me, but its real and we need to import foreign concept to justify our personal life-styles, please excuse me from labelling as racist because I dont excuse any race as inferior like slave like American negros and Tibetans like American white masters)..China have everything: time, population, money, military, superior geopolitical influence, education, and so forth. What do we have? Nothing. We only have a national symbolism in the form of current Dalai Lama who is umipeachable symbol with unimpeachable characteristics, philosophy, politics, strategy; who happenned to be a great scholar and lived up to the definition of great scholar to worldly and great saints and Boddhisatva for the faithful believers, innovator (starting science in great monastic universities), thinker, and people take him seriously. He makes us proud to be a Tibetan and we benefit when we mention his name. When he is gone, we are fucked up and will go into oblivion and obscutrity. I sense that there are Tibetans from exile will say he or she is not Tibetan in the future as some did in early 1960-1980, before Dalai Lama became a darling of the media, not a great scholar and think yet! When he personally established his great scholar and religious teacher with rigorous talk and dialogue with every kind of thinkers and academecians, people took him seriously.

But Happy Dreaming my rangzen wallas compatriots in idealism and loosing battle in personal life for Tibet and for being a Tibetan.
The least thing we can do is, be Tibetan in the purest form and proud of it with confidence and with backup in its language, culture, religion, literatey, history, and so forth irrespective of in good or bad time for Tibet or for you personally.

enough of your bullshit. i think you are one of those sent by CCP to create chaos in exile. get lost!

  98. I simply pointed out the truth! If have vision, better be sensible and do a better job than creating chaos in society. Sometimes you have to be devil’s advocate in order to cut your type crab and empty actions. Hope, I acted a better mirror for you and make you aware of what is your situation and our situation…..go ahead!

    NG

  99. @bho-rangzen: as I pointed out earlier, CCP don’t need to speend millions to send people, JN and his gullible followers you are just doing that. Jamyang Norbu surprisingly outdone anybody, even outdone the workof ministry of truth and united front desk in Beijing. The only difference is, jn and people like your type operate under democracy and freedom of whatever choice you select, this is a open covert, like an open secret. Therefore, it necessitated for me to point out your empty slogans with zero actions, because it seems people you and your guru jn seem lost in your dream and deceived by your own slogans. A lie repeated hundredtimes truth, similarly it seems you more in your empty slogans the more you talk and write, so as a fellow Tibet, I help out you with your real conditions. I still did not give up hope on you provided you translated your word in action, not necessarily taking arms against might China, but do some real stuff. Till then, I just don’t give a shit about you and give pointing your mistake out when you cross your limit under whatever pretext you have in store for self defense.

    NG

  100. Not crying wolf.
Save Lhasa (including any tea house in Banakshol) and other landmarks in far flung eastern provinces from CCP’s monstrous ‘Paved Paradise’.

  101. @NG

YOU’RE A GOOD EXAMPLE OF EXILE CTA INFLUENCE TURNING PEOPLE INTO COWARDS. STARTING FROM 50 YEARS AGO AND CONTINUING STILL.THERE ARE STILL SOME PEOPLE NOT AFFECTED BY THE CTA COWARDICE TRAINING AND CRUSHING OF SPIRIT.

  102. @NG

Thanks for your very revealing little political manifesto.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but you peddle many logical flaws in your position, not least of which is equating Rangzen to violence. The CCP also peddle this little lie. So does SR.

You also appear ignorant of history, why can Tibet not gain independence when so many oppressed nations have? If East Timor can, so can Tibet. It’s just a matter of persistence and time.

You appear to have given up on all fronts and found refuge in cynicism.

  103. @anobserver: as you read, I said violence one option, another option is also gaining international support from government governments. I don’t see it happenning and no rangzen wallas are doing itneither I said Tibet cannot be independent nor I falsified hsitory. Maybe you are too good at reading stuff that you taught in exile schools about history. I clearly stated that given enormous odds even the complicated history that rangzen wallas present as Tibet from 13th dalai lama is full of loop holes. It only covers where kudras ran without restraint and turning the once powerful land into deudal ferfs. Kham and amdo existed on its own without political meddling from lhasa for centuries. Therefore, we don’t even have a whole truth even if fight in court. I am not sure how can you defend truth while truth is also a half truth. Beside truth, what do you have? Your kids are more indian and nepali than Tibetan only after one generations. What can you expect. in all my debate with rangzen wallas, who will push china and get independence. There is no answer and no answers except citing few global events at times. East Timor got independence, not through writing and infighting on internet through internet where there is no risk. East Timoreans fought with poorly armed indonesian troops andaid with blood, UN had to send in peace keeping force. So, even taking you’re example, who will pay with blood against Chinese? I am hundred percent not you, not jn, not your family, in fact your family packed up blanks aalllready immigrated to the west by dumping lone dalai lama in dhasa. What I dotn want is , Tibetaans inside being instigated by cowards like you type and exiles. I don’t want my kith and kins loose love for your crooked believe for which you are doing nothing except reading books and pretending you are model fighter and champion of Tibetan rights and high philosopher. @ honey oo boo: I don’t trust your exile cta who heads are all opportunist. From gyari to Tethong, fromtashi wangdi to LS, they all have one thing in common, send your kids to dear ENGLISH LANGUGE school and then export entire families to United States. Then they move on after finishing and establishing safe ase, they pretend to be nationalist and come back dhasa and fooling Dalai Lama. Your enire exile system is fucked except only honest Dalai Lama. What can we exprect from you? Shall we take you seriously……you are not even a shit on the street……why should I respect you? My writing abbout the ugly side of your diaspora Tibetan probably made you think more and be ashamed of being part of a crime ring.

Think about those questions carefully and response how are you pushing China to leave Tibet? What is your comprehensive history of Tibet before 1949? Why Tibetan government station its army in chamdo, the west of drichu and west of kham? Why itslegitimate representative aristocrat Ngabo stationed to oversee affairs of nobles in Lhasa. Don’t forget khampa were happy by no illusion be under kudras, let alone be part of it and enjoyed while UTsang commers sufferred under the merciless torture of kudras. You can wash the blood and present a nice events oof kudra rule, but you cannot hide the wound many endured. Finally, who will do the fighteither forcefully or peacefully

  104. @NG

As usual you’re wrong. Go read up about the East Timorese struggle. There was a referendum, not a battle. The referendum was brought about through international pressure following brutal suppression and human rights abuses. Sound familiar? No country supported East Timor – then suddenly they did.

There was intimidation of innocent East Timorese by Indonesian thugs paid and backed by the Indonesian military. Not a military confrontation as you infer.

  105. N.G.— O.K.You win. I lose. I got your point.

You sounded very much like my Tibetan Teacher.

    Chill out!

Rangzenwalas only quest is for independence for Tibet. We donot think China deserve to be treated with such high regard.

How are we going to win Rangzen?? Thats a big question and an important one. I usually answer this way:
First, make all tibetan believe and trust in themselves and their abilities to overcome all the odds. His holiness always advice us to “NEver Give Up”. Why are we giving up on this one? This spirit will keep us going.

People like JN are trying to instill this confidence in us and not trying to devide us. Once you have the confidence you can achieve your goal.

For that reason, Rangzenwalas are writing– and please know that to ‘Write” on national importance is an action– sometimes more important than 9-5 job in Dharamsala.

Lastly, chill out and learn to live in diversity.

    Yours obidiently pupil,
    Agu Tonpa.

  106. $ 90,000 New Tibet Office Representative to U.S and resignation of important people in International Campaign for Tibet:

Crooked Sikyong has announced in small print on CTA website the posting of his friend Kalsang Aukatsang as Tibet Office Representative for U.S. People inside Kashag are also saying that while other and former Tibetan Rerpesentatives received a standard salary, Sikyong’s friend who will take office in summer will be drawing Ninety Thousand U.S. dollars.

Sikyong is reported to have told his inner circle that all his actions follow his three main core principles: – self- reliance, innovation and unity. His logic: Kalsang Aukatsang will be raising his salary on his own initiatives and as for innovation part is concerned, he (Sikyong) has gone outside normal official appointment procedure and found a highly qualified person. For unity is concerned, there is not many Dhoncho from certain region and hence his friend Aukatsang qualifies for this.

What a logic and what a rotten principle from a very corrupt man.

He is also reported to have bursted out to some senior confidante that he is pressuring some important people in Washington D.C. to resign.

The senior cabinet members are dismayed and are saying that all official conducts in hiring and firing are done purely based on personal grudge and liking and many are saying that if his target in ICT is, its very capable executive director Mary Beth Markey, then it will be a great loss for Tibet and Tibetan cause.

Members of his Inner circle are whispering that his intention seems to be to find a position for his mistress in ICT.

There is lot of drama in Dharamsala and Washington. JN should do some digging. Some in Sikyong’s innner circle started whispering. It seems like there is lot of guilt every where that we got the wrong guy in the Kashag. Some are fearing worst. Keep reading JN’s blog. Tibetan politics is getting very nasty.

  107. 90 Thousand U.S. dollar New Dhoncho for U.S coming and news of resignation of important people at ICT:

Our crooked Sikyong has posted his friend and advisor Kalsang Aukastang as Dhongchoe/ Tibet Office Chief/ Ambassador for U.S. Announcement was made only in Tibetan langauge and his appointment is buried in small prints. News can be found in CTA website.

Sources in his administration say, what others do not know is that while other Dhonchoe draw a standard salary, his friend will be paid $ 90,000 per year. He thinks his friend is worth paying six figure salary but it would be scandalous in Tibetan community.

Sources say, Sikyong has told his inner circle that the appointment of his friends fits his three core principle of being self-reliant, innovation and unity.

His logic is Kalsang Aukastang, the new Dhoncho, unlike the old one will be fund raising for his own salary( self-reliant); second, he has gone outside normal bureaucratic appointment to find a Dhoncho who is capable;(innovation) and third, there is no better person who can unify Tibetan community in Washington, which he says he find it ” pivotal” They say, “pivotal” the very word he used.

Sources in his administration say Sikyong’s meaning of Tibetan community in D.C. seems nothing, but control of International Campaign for Tibet and two Tibetan radios – all important media with an eye on his next election.

A very important insider also says, he has bursted out saying he is pressuring several important person to resign at ICT. Several members of his cabinet confide that all his posting, promotion and firing are mostly based on his personal liking or grudges he hold, which sources say he has plenty.

The insider says, many senior members of his administration are very concerned that his target at ICT is its very capable President Mary Beth Markey. They feared her leaving ICT, will be a great loss to Tibet and Tibetan cause. They seem to suspect he is doing this to place his Mistress in a position of influence in ICT.

They also say, behind all his despicable self-centered, personal grudge based, crony politics, the brain is that of – the new Dhonchoe Kalsang Aukstang.

JN should do some digging and it is becoming easier now as there are more and more insiders willing to leak the information. There is a collective feeling that leaking information for public awareness is now the best protection they could accord for Tibetan democracy.

  108. @obbserver: go and live inDili and study more rather than reading and throwing out those half truth as your first hand info.

    NG

  109. Aukatsang kids are well-known for hankering after titles and positions without actual contribution and productivity in the related fields. People could never quite get what exactly Kaydor was doing in Kashag – his title changing from Tibet Corps director to development director to advisor to special advisor. But what exactly did he do in each of those positions? Even his prior experiences seems all name-dropping of some institutes rather than some relevant work experiences. The only Tibetan position he held in California of TANC President was wrought with controversies.

Likewise, if one look up his sibling Youdon Aukatsang’s CV, it is all big names of this institute or that insitute and this and that position but in reality we know how she functions as Chithue both in the parliament and outside of it. Nothing spectacular, really. She couldn’t even speak properly in the parliament. In that sense, that sharling lady is like a breath of fresh air – all fire and substance.

Anyways, Gangkyi is quite shocked with this fresh appointment which they see as nothing but pure nepotism on Sangay’s part. But with the kind of yesmanship that these aukatsang kids displays, it will not be long before junkie youdon is also appointed to some such positions in the near future or in Sangay’s next term. Lets wait and watch and see how this sangay will clown around more with such moves.

I can see Sangay digging his own grave politically if he goes on hiring and firing spree based on his personal likes and dislikes.

  110. Deep Throat:
Your assessment is mostly right. Aukatsang transfer was talk about long time ago. I met him few times and i met his sister many times through mutual friends- we are close and she says this story to her friends.
Kalsang shares room with LS and he is LS’s brain, speech writer, fundraiser etc. I am concern without him, LS will make lots of mistakes. All his Kalons were opportunist and have not much insightful. They are just good followers.

LS is very clever– he is making friends with influential people- he is inviting these people to dinner a lot. NEwpaper editors are all his friends and he pressure them to what to and what not to publish in the news. The worst is Setha Tsultrim- He was a rangzen supporter and then suddenly he criticise JN and got out of Rangzen party. I can understand that because now he is friends with LS. I saw him going for dinner almost every night at Sikyong’s house. So, he is doing skyong’s dirty job. Youdon Aukatsang was also sikyong friends and through her many young chinthus were recruited to her group and pledged not to criticised LS.

During parliamentary session, Youdon and Serthar tsultrim invited all of the dhotoe chithus to Sikyong’s residence and had party almost every night— ofcourse this is from CTA’s budget. Some of the youdon’s friend from other cholka attended someday. But mostly Dhotoe Chithus.

Have you noticed youdon’s friend Dhadon sharling’s action in parliament recently? Youdon made her go against U-tsang chithus. Her voting record is with Youdon. In the meantime, she acts cool and show off as if she is an intellectual.

There are many chithus like them who are waiting for Sikyong’s appointment to an important post. I’ll update you when time comes.

You are right, many officials are concern about Sikyong’s action. His holiness was also concern. Sikyong and his supporters are always hold grudges about Tethong’s supporter and those who criticise him. Since, he has the backing of Samdhong and all the Dhotoe and Choluk Cthithus except one, he thinks he can do everything.

    Anyog

  111. sikyong has proven again and again that he is just a power hungry opportunist. colluding with some other opportunists. old gyari’s replaced by new gyaris and aukas and kalden lodoes. Its only towrds HHDL that one feels a sense of belonging. other than that i feel nothing for sikyong and his playground CTA.actually have no need for them.

  112. I find it quite amusing how some people talk about Dr. Lobsang Sangay as if his political temper fell like a bolt out of the blue onto a virgin scene which hitherto knew nothing of duplicity in statecraft-as if before his arrival on the political stage, the powers that be were selflessly nurturing and upholding some kind of Marxist socialist utopia as envisaged by Kundun, wherein the collective was happy, free from greed, want, all sharing equally labor and resources in a egalitarian Eden. As if these conscientious antecedents in power preoccupied themselves 24/7 to careful deliberations of how their actions might effect the well-being or distress of those they serve.

Then something wicked this way came in the semblance of the Sikyong who forever corrupted demi paradise, turning wine to water, spoiling the once pristine political sphere with the ugly blight of nepotism, cronyism, lack of transparency, accountability, etc.

If only that were the case! Alas, the tendency of people, especially in the domain of politics, power and corruption is old as Plato’s dialogues from The Republic. The very seed of corruption is within all of us. So one may accuse the Sikyong a moiety of incorrigible human nature but it is bit unfair to place all the sins upon his head.

Many Tibetans tend to effortlessly forget that Dr. Lobsang Sangay is the poster boy for MW, a handmaiden of the Dalai lama, therefore, his political decisions, whatever they may be, would assuredly have the backing and the blessings of the Dalai Lama and the coterie of men (mostly monks) who run Gaden Phodrang.

  113. In the latest Phayul news headline “Kaydor Aukatsang is new NA Representative, Reshuffle in Europe.” One excerpt evinces an oft quoted, feeble iteration that, “With the ‘complete devolution’ of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s formal authority to the elected leadership in 2011, the constitutional authority to appoint Representatives, earlier vested with the Dalai Lama was delegated to the Kashag (cabinet).”

For the upteempth time I am left asking, If the Dalai Lama completely retired from politics as per official Dharamsala propaganda, then why is the elected cabinet still appointing “Representatives of the Dalai Lama” AS IF he still rules the roost? If the Dalai Lama is now just a private citizen, what are the Representatives representing?!?!

Surely these Representatives are no monks, so they must be representing the Dalai Lama’s political views! Obviously the conclusion trivially follows, the Dalai Lama has not retired from politics.

The CTA’s appointment of Representatives seem nothing more than an exercise of rubber stamping the dictates of Gaden Phodrang, the true power brokers behind CTA. As the epigram goes, “the more things change, the more they stay the same.”

Contrary to the notion of, out with the old and in with the new, the geriatric theocracy of old still permeates Tibetan society in all facets of control, especially in the political arena. It was only 2 years hence(a year after the retirement of the Dalai lama) that CTA “celebrated the 360th anniversary of unique Tibetan government system known as Gaden Phodrang Chokley Namgyal”

The pro Marxist Dalai Lama and the puppet PM, with fake sincerity, flaunts the facade of exile Democracy to the Democratic loving liberal nations of the world, bragging in order to beg sympathy and aid, but in reality, having no intention of instituting mature democracy beyond a one party system, nil intention of genuinely establishing open engagement with the populace concerning Tibetan political issues.

Meanwhile, for Beijing’s eyes only, Dr. Lobsang Sangay, echoing the Dalai Lama’s views, ingratiates murderous China by stating, “We don’t challenge, or ask for an overthrow of the Communist Party. We don’t question or challenge the present structure of the ruling party. We are not asking for democracy for Tibetans in Tibet… we want rights as per the Chinese constitution.”

In the instance of RFA controversy, freedom of speech and pluralistic views are casualties of Gaden Phodrang’s prerogative, the primacy of which is the indoctrination of Tibetans in Tibet apropos the cult of personality in the form of the Dalai Lama along with the maintenance of superstitious Tibetan Buddhism.

As much as the Dalai Lama’s waxing of poetics regarding Liberal Democracy, and as much as he vociferously denies that he and his kind, the clerics, wants to hold onto power, his actions betray his words. He is banking on the assumption that Tibetan Buddhism will be the bolt cutter to break China’s hegemony over Tibet.

In conclusion, it seems reasonable to assume that no matter how the Tibetan issue is resolved,(or not resolved) regardless of whether we call our form of government Democratic, or Communism, the Theocracy of Gaden Phodrang will be the one wielding true power, it will continue to pervade Tibetan sociopolitical landscape like the background radiation from the Big Bang.

  117. TALK OF THE HILLTOWN is that Sikyong Lobsang Sangye ELECTED Kaydor Aukatsang (Who? Did I hear it clear?) as Rep of HH to the US.

Lobsang Sangye played all the way to the top by his mere flashing of Harvard card and narrating ghostly stories of pre-59 Kutrak. Poor monks! They feel a Harvard degree is all it takes to get their long-lost country back! When elected, LS expressed a dramatic sigh of relief that Samdong holds no reservation on any future change of policies. Three years down the lane, not a single noteworthy policy or amendment to policies of national importance, rolled out. All we here is a series of photo-ops here and there and the same cock-and bull-story (parents selling cow for Rs 500, himself selling carrots for pocket money, studying under streetlight like Dr Manmohan Singh, and so on).

Now with his appointment of Aukatsang Sekushok Kalsang, with no service and experience background, to pompous designations such as Tibet Corps Co-ordinator, Personal Advisor, Speech Writer, and, most recently, Rep of His Holiness to the US! I think LS’s proverbial sinister pot is filling up! Tibetan youngster have been volunteering in Dharamsala since 80s, why do we need this TibetCorps brand now? What is he advising? Maybe when and where LS must sport his overly-used Rayban Aviator. What speech does he draft? how can someone who failed to represent Bay Area Tibetans properly in front of His Holiness be a speech writer, and now a face of His Holiness, CTA and the Tibetans in the US? After all, we hear LS repeats the same speech he spoke during his campaign again and again and again. So what need is there for a speech-writer?

Aukatsangs, both Kaydor and Youdon, came by the same route, through their father’s connection with high Tibetan officials! Everyone here in Dhasa knows this well. Dharamsala employment and exam rules do not apply for these special kids. Nepotism by high officials and shameless hijacking of posts by these people are deterrents strong enough to scare today’s youngsters from Dharamsala.

However, all credit of the siblings’ success goes to their late father (who Youdon Aukatsang ascribes unknown historical value and erroneously glorifies as ”the Lion”). Pick any x, y or z Khampas (not sold-out Khampas or counterfeits as JN-la calls it) from the street and ask who Jampa Kalden is, and you’ll get a clear answer. Aukatsang’s success comes from their ability to change colors according to the changing tides.

LS must remember that CTA is not a family business or a private company. Any disregard towards this will cost him his next election.

  118. @ 132,

You are very right about what you wrote. The auka cubs want to rule the roost now. i can smell the stench of chikdril tsokpa from far away.

As for Sikyong, he is getting carried away, basking in the notion that Tibetans in Tibet as well as in Exile support him and going full throttle with the misuse of power. just watch and see, when the people come out of their stupor and find out the real perosn that he is -he will learn a lesson for sure.

  119. whoever declared JN as a trumpet-blower needs to jump into a lake without much ado; that’s an ignorant and irresponsible way of perceiving life and reality. JN isn’t right all the time, but he is a foremost intellectual and contributed significantly into what little good has come of the Tibetan diaspora. His narrative can’t be judged as you would do of those occasional pen-ner of a self-published slim volume with mere imagined intellectual heft- he’s a real writer.

  120. Old Monk,
You are right. I quietly admit that JN is the foremost intelectual and contributed significantly in the Tibetan diaspora. He is a real-writer, a commoner ( more years being commoner than aristocrat), and a passionate freedom fighter.
I respect him deep down in my heart!

    Thuk Je Che!
